Това е най-силното земетресение в България след катастрофалната двойка земетресения през април 1928 година – чирпанското земетресение на 14 април 1928 г. и пловдивско-поповишкото на 18 април 1928 г. Епицентърът е в района на град Стражица, около Асеново, на 7 километра разстояние, магнитудът 5, 7, дълбочината на източника – на 13 километра под земната повърхност.
Фактически земетръсната активизация в района на Стражица (Горнооряховска сеизмична зона) започва на 21 февруари 1986 г. със земетресение с магнитуд 5, 1 и интензивност в Асеново, Мирово, Бреговица, Кавлак и Стражица от седма степен по 12-степенната скала за въздействията. След този утринен трус, нанесъл щети (напуквания в стени около отвори и пукнатини между комини и покриви), активизацията продължава. Намаляването на броя на трусовете се сменя от роеве слабо усещани сътресения до 23 ноември. На 23 ноември се разразява един кратковременен рой от твърде слаби земетресения (11 – 12 труса с магнитуд около 2 до 2, 5), усещани от станалите чувствителни жители на епицентралната област (т.е. Стражишки район). Това е роят, предтеча на земетресението на 7 декември в 16 часа и 17 минути. Епицентърът е отново в Асеново. Няколкото селища в близост, включително и град Стражица, попадат в област на въздействие с интензитет до 8-а степен по 12-степенната скала на Медведев-Шпонхойер-Карник.

Впоследствие обаче Политбюро на ЦК на БКП отчита, че такова строителство е грешка, тъй като е временно, и практически бараките трудно издържат на зимите. Но парите са вече похарчени. Изградени и ремонтирани са 5564 къщи и общински жилища, но и не малко остават незавършени на различен етап на строителство.
